No bonfires or fireworks on Swiss National Day as Bern introduces a fire ban

With drought conditions persisting and a heatwave forecast, the authorities in the Canton of Bern have introduced stricter measures to reduce the risk of wildfires. Effective immediately, any type of open fire is prohibited in forests and within 50 metres of woodland across the entire canton.

The decision has been announced ahead of Swiss National Day on 1 August to give municipalities, event organisers and residents clarity when planning celebrations. The Office for Forests and Natural Hazards is expected to reassess the situation on 6 August.

Bonfires and fireworks banned
Wildfire danger is currently rated at Level 4 out of 5 ("High"). In addition to the fire ban, the cantonal authorities have introduced a general ban on fireworks throughout Bern.

The ban covers all fireworks, rockets and other pyrotechnic devices, even outside forest areas. It also includes sky lanterns, traditional mountain bonfires and 1 August bonfires. Fireworks launched from lakes, however, remain permitted.

Outside the restricted forest zones, fires may only be lit in officially designated fire pits. Authorities urge the public to exercise extreme caution: fires must never be left unattended, sparks should be extinguished immediately, and lighting fires should be avoided altogether in windy conditions.
