For twenty years, the Gstaad New Year Music Festival has illuminated the festive season with a singular focus: the human voice.

A quick look back: twenty-four years ago, Princess Caroline Murat co-founded the Sommets Musicaux with Thierry Scherz. Soon after, she launched a second festival to bring music into the heart of the festive period. Its success was immediate. Today, the world’s great voices are heard in the intimate churches of Saanen, Gstaad, Lauenen, a nd Rougemont, venues renowned for their superb acoustics and a uniquely enchanting end-of-year atmosphere.

The anniversary edition promises a glittering line-up. Cecilia Bartoli appears in Saanen on 30 December, and Marina Viotti sings in Rougemont on New Year’s Day — a free concert for all. Both divas recently earned thunderous ovations at the Menuhin Festival. They will be joined by Nadine Sierra, Golda Schultz, Anna El-Kashem, and the incomparable Asmik Grigorian, one of tod a y ’s m o s t sought-after sopranos. The gentlemen take the stage as well: rising stars Xabier Anduaga and Jakub Józef Orlinski, the commanding Vittorio Grigolo, and the legendary Plácido Domingo.
