This winter, Siegfried Contemporary brings together works by Robert Coutelas, Meuser, Rosemarie Trockel and Machteld Rullens in an exhibition that focuses on one central question: what happens when artists rethink the materials we consider ordinary, functional – even industrial?

Rather than tracing a neat historical line, Material – Form – Object unfolds as a set of parallel positions. Across generations and contexts, the four artists reinterpret materials such as cardboard, steel and ceramic, transforming them into autonomous works of art. What once served a practical purpose is stripped of function and reintroduced as form, idea and presence.

The exhibition makes clear that these materials are neither symbols of scarcity nor nostalgic relics. They are active agents. Through cutting, bending, firing, assembling and reimagining, they acquire new identities. Materials, the show suggests, have an afterlife. They endure beyond their original use and gather meaning through processes of making and thinking.

Visitors are invited to look more closely at what might otherwise be overlooked. Materials are not fixed categories but shifting states shaped by context, history and handling. In this setting, the everyday becomes a field of aesthetic possibility, and each object a meeting point of material, form and concept.
