Their silky, hairy leaves and stems help protect them from cold winds and the flowers turn into distinctive, fluffy seed heads later in the season.
They’ve long been linked with ideas of renewal and new beginnings, simply because they’re among the first flowers to appear after winter.
In folklore, they were sometimes said to grow where blood was spilled on ancient burial grounds.
