HEAVY HITTERS AT TARMAK22 - a new Sculptural Force

  15.08.2025 Arts & Culture

Six female sculptors has reshaped the language of form

At Tarmak22 this summer, sculpture is not what you think it is. It speaks. It breathes. It collapses in on itself. It leans toward you with softness, urgency, wit, and tension.

Heavy Hitters brings together six Spanish women artists—June Crespo, Ángela de la Cruz, Laia Estruch, Eva Fàbregas, Teresa Solar Abboud, and Julia Spínola—each working at the edge of what sculpture can be. Shown together for the first time in this constellation, they present a shared language rooted in transformation—of materials, of the body, and of lived experience.

Curated by Antonia Crespí and presented in collaboration with Travesía Cuatro, Bombon Projects, and Ehrhardt Flórez, the exhibition traces a conceptual arc across two generations. De la Cruz, based in London since the 1990s, is the show’s anchor. Her works are painting-sculpture hybrids—crushed, broken, powerful. They speak of collapse, but also resistance. The younger artists follow suit, not in form but in fearlessness.

Estruch uses voice as matter, sculpting its breath and tone. Fàbregas makes sensuous, inflatable forms that defy expectations—plush and almost alive. Crespo and Spínola explore the porous boundary between inside and out, industrial and organic. Solar builds sculptural ecosystems: modular, evolving, deeply ecological.

Together, they reflect on Spain’s generational shift—from rural memory to modern speed—and reclaim material as something deeply personal. Their works are grounded in a politics of care and connection. Sculpture, in their hands, is not fixed or monumental. It is elastic, embodied, and profoundly contemporary.

The result is an exhibition that feels both intimate and epic. Heavy Hitters doesn’t just expand the idea of sculpture—it unravels it and remakes it from the inside out.

On view at Tarmak22, Gstaad Airport, until 13 September.
