Green Light for Gstaad House

  04.10.2025 Arts & Culture

A striking timber structure by Foster + Partners is set to rise in Gstaad. The newly approved Gstaad House will unite art, design, and innovation under one roof—offering space for exhibitions, concerts, and collectors, while redefining how culture is experienced in the Alps.

Building Permit Granted for Gstaad House
Construction profiles have long been in place below Lauenenstrasse, marking the site where a new landmark building will rise in the coming years – the so-called Gstaad House. The plan envisions a space that will host both private collections and public exhibitions, concerts, and events.

The municipality of Saanen has confirmed that the building permit for the Gstaad House project has been granted. This clears the way for the construction of a multi-storey timber structure designed by the internationally renowned architectural firm Foster + Partners.

Public spaces and private collections under one roof
According to Foster + Partners’ website, Gstaad House will combine a variety of functions. Of particular significance to the local community is the ground floor, which will feature exhibition areas for public use – for example, art shows, concerts, and cultural events. A multifunctional hall is planned to accommodate a wide range of activities.

Below ground, an area of 3,000 square metres will provide secure storage for valuable items such as artworks, antiques, fashion pieces, and classic cars. The upper floors will house a private club and gallery spaces that can be reserved for members on certain days and opened to the public on others.

An integrated ramp will spiral around the entire building, connecting every level from the ground floor to the penthouse, allowing continuous circulation for both pedestrians and vehicles.

“A place to share collections”
Siamak Siassi
, founder and chairman of Gstaad House (Switzerland) AG, has devoted himself full-time to the project since 2018. In an interview with the Anzeiger von Saanen, he explained his motivation and vision.

“I believe that collections only reach their full value when they can be shared,” Siassi said. “My main idea was to create a place where collectors can store their objects securely while also having the opportunity to display and trade them in a fitting environment. The second goal was to establish Gstaad House as a brand – not only as a building. The name could later be used for special events, partnerships, or even products.”

A contribution to the local community
Asked about the project’s significance for Saanen residents, Siassi stressed its openness:

“We want the building to be accessible to the public as well. There will be days with concerts and exhibitions. The multifunctional event space with modern infrastructure will allow for all kinds of gatherings. What’s especially important to me is that the outdoor infrastructure – the access roads and the new roundabout – will benefit everyone, including local businesses.”

Collaboration with Foster + Partners
How did this collaboration with one of the world’s most prestigious architectural firms come about?

“From the start, I was looking for a partner with experience and a global perspective,” Siassi explained. “Foster + Partners immediately understood the vision: to create a kind of ecosystem integrated into nature, combining diverse fields such as automobiles, art, fashion, and antiques, while the upper levels will focus on dining, wellness, and community. The architects were enthusiastic about the idea – and I knew their design would make the building a true architectural landmark.”

Construction to start in 2026
A landmark naturally attracts visitors, and that has raised concerns in the past.

“During the public consultation in 2022, there were objections from residents worried about increased traffic,” Siassi said. “We took those concerns seriously, which is why providing proper infrastructure was our first priority.”

With the infrastructure now in place and the building permit granted, construction of Gstaad House is expected to begin in April 2026.

“Of course, we also work closely with local partners,” Siassi added. “Alongside Foster + Partners, companies such as Egger Ingenieure AG and the municipality of Saanen are key collaborators. For me, teamwork is essential.”
