Guerino Paltenghi does not hurry. Perhaps he never has, but at 91 there seems even less reason to start now. He paints, quietly and continuously, and only every second year does he gather the work together for an exhibition.

The paintings in this new exhibition remain close to the world Paltenghi knows and observes: the nature and flowers of the Pays-d’Enhaut and the landscape around his studio in Purasca, Ticino. There, inspiration sometimes comes no further than the neighbouring pasture. From his studio window, he watches the sheep outside – modest, everyday subjects that find their way onto his canvases.

It is an approach that has long characterised Paltenghi’s painting. He does not seek the spectacular. Flowers in front of a window, a snowy valley, bottles on a table, or a simple rural scene are enough. In his hands, these familiar subjects become quieter and more personal. As Jacques Biolley wrote of his work last year, Paltenghi draws on “very humble subjects” to enter the mystery of the living world. There is something rather wonderful about an artist of 91 still looking out of the window and finding something worth painting. Perhaps that is also why Paltenghi’s work feels so unforced. The subject need not announce itself. A flower, a sheep in a field, or a particular light or season can be enough.

And while exhibitions may come only every two years, the painting continues in between. This latest show offers us a glimpse of what Paltenghi has been seeing – and painting – since we last looked.
