Swisscom brings ultra-fast internet to the region

Swisscom has announced plans to expand its fibre-optic network (FTTH – Fibre to the Home) to the municipality of Saanen, with construction set to begin in 2026. The first connections are expected to go live as early as autumn that year, offering internet speeds of up to 10 Gbit/s.

This upgrade promises a major boost for Saanenland residents and businesses, particularly the growing number of people working from home. Fast and stable connections are increasingly essential for videoconferencing, streaming, or digital services. For those considering relocating to the region, this may be one more reason to make the move.

Where and when?
The rollout will cover several areas of the municipality free of charge, including Schönried Waldmatte, Grüenbühl, Gruben, Ebnit, Mettlen, Unter-Gstaad, northern parts of Gstaad centre (north of Gschwendand Lauenenstrasse), Gstaad-Bissen, and Turbach. Swisscom aims to complete this phase of the expansion by 2027. Future stages are planned for other areas, such as Gstaad-Wispile.

Importantly, the infrastructure will be open to various service providers – including Wingo, Salt, and Sunrise – offering residents a choice beyond Swisscom’s own plans.

Digital leap for a mountain region
“We’re pleased that Swisscom will soon begin expanding fibre-optic access in our municipality,” said Mayor Petra Schläppi. “Fast and reliable internet is essential today. It supports digital transformation and strengthens Saanen as a place to live and work – for both individuals and businesses.”

A greener, faster future
The project is part of Swisscom’s national strategy to bring fibre-optic access to around 57 % of Switzerland by the end of 2025, and to 75–80 % by 2030. As fibre replaces the country’s nearly 150-year-old copper network, energy savings will also follow – comparable to the annual electricity consumption of a Swiss city with 20 000 residents.

In addition to the fibre expansion, Swisscom is continuing to roll out next-generation mobile networks such as 5G. These technologies will complement the fixed network, helping to deliver strong internet even to more remote and scattered settlements.
