“Vienna – Beethoven delayed”

  29.08.2022 Arts & Culture

The 66th Gstaad Menuhin Festival & Academy "Vienna - Beethoven Delayed" concert programme has been delighting audiences at venues across the Saanenland since it opened on 15 July. Celebrating Vienna’s momentous contribution to music across the centuries as well as Beethoven’s 250th birthday, the full roster of more than 60 concerts offers something for everyone – right down to the youngest of audiences.

But if you haven’t had the chance to attend a concert yet, don’t worry. The programme doesn’t end until 3 September so there’s still plenty to enjoy, including these five concerts in the Gstaad Festival Tent:

Saturday 27 August (19.30)*
This performance of The Magic Flute opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is brought to the stage by Christophe Rousset, one of the most accomplished experts on historical performance practice. Rousset conducts the Talens Lyriques and the Ensemble Vocal de Lausanne with an international cast of singers led by the soprano Sandrine Piau in the role of Pamina. (180’, interval included)

Sunday 28 August (17.00)
Here’s one for the family – Peer Gynt by Edvard Grieg as a light and shadows show performed by children of the Saanenland. An adventure in the land of trolls and goblins with adventure on the high seas, this child-friendly production brings the majesty of musical performance to the youngest audience members. Tickets for children are priced at just CHF 15. (60’)

Wednesday 31 August (19.30)*†
With works from a host of composers including Rossini, Verdi and Bizet, this symphony concert features tenor Juan Diego Flórez and the Sinfonía por el Perú (youth orchestra) under the baton of Roberto González-Monjas. The orchestra’s goal is to give these talented musicians the opportunity to take part in international tours by bringing great music and the voice of Peru and Latin American folklore to those who do not have access to it. (120’, interval included)

Friday 2 September (19.30)*
In a symphony concert entitled ‘Vienna 1901- Beethoven 250’ Bomsori Kim (Menuhin Heritage Artist for violin) returns to the Festival to perform Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 61, arguably one of the finest solo concertos ever composed, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 in G Major. Kim will be joined in this performance by Chen Reiss, soprano, and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, conducted by Alain Altinoglu. (130’, interval included)

Saturday 3 September
(19.30)*†

The grand finale of the
"Vienna – Beethoven
Delayed" programme is, fittingly, a symphony concert by the Viennese Johann Strauss Orchestra, under the baton of Alfred Eschwé. What can you expect? Waltzes and polkas of course, but much more besides, reflecting the vibrant music scene in 19th and early 20th century Vienna. Polina Pasztircsák, soprano, and Dovlet Nurgeldiyev, tenor, star in this performance which honours the music of Johann Strauss II, one of Vienna’s great masters, as well as Lehár, Kálmán, Zeller and Sieczyński.

* The Festival Express coach service from Bern and Lausanne is available for these concerts.

† The ‘Teens Go Concert’ discovery programme offers tickets at CHF 10 (free to teens from the Saanenland, Obersimmental and Pays-d’Enhaut) for these concerts, including a behind-the-scenes experience and the opportunity to meet the musicians for selfies and autographs.

Visit www.gstaadmenuhinfestival.ch to book tickets. Contact Razia Chaudhry on +41 79 629 46 19 regarding ‘Teens Go Concert’.
