New vintage posters

Gstaad’s nostalgic tourism posters and postcards have always been popular.
We know them and love them: The illustrated tourism posters and postcards of the Saanenland dating back to the 20th century. Although popular t was time for a new take on the old designs, thought Frank Müller, CEO of Müller Medien AG, in Gstaad. But how should the new posters look so that they would transfer the charm of past times into the present without losing their allure? How can you express the “tranquillity of nature” without looking boring? And finally, how do you portray a landscape so that the viewer is touched? Frank Müller set out in search of answers and discovered the Lausanne artist Pierre Abraham Rochat.

A window into a place or a moment
For the time being six “images” have been created; Schönried, Lauenensee,
Gummfluh, Gsteig, Saanen and Lake Arnen. The posters are captivating with their simple lines, yet detailed and contemporary retro look. The artist, Pierre Abraham Rochat, explains: “If you take your time and let the images sink in, you can indeed feel the touch of days gone by, but it reflects the present, thanks to the contemporary style that is modern again today. I like to draw what I see and depict the landscape realistically to create a window into a place and a moment that has touched me.”

Neither cows nor goats
The landscapes and villages depicted may come across as reduced, stripped back to the essentials. Water, mountains, trees, houses in between a fence, a person in a boat, and a church. No cows, no goats. “Since I started drawing art, I like to look for the most effective line or curve to represent a mountain and play with graphic forms so that an element is interesting both as a subject and through its form,” says Rochat. It’s also about finding a balance between illustration and realism. It’s clear that he is a “big fan” of retro posters and the brilliant illustrators who designed them.

“Magical region”
Pierre Abraham Rochat enjoys hiking here in summer and says: “The Pays d’Enhaut and the Saanenland have always seemed like a magical region to me. I come by train via Montreux, and as soon as you pass through the tunnel under the Col de Jaman, you enter a region seemingly spared the hustle and bustle of the plains. Designing the posters was a pleasure but also much work,” he says. He made many different sketches of various locations and seasons, from which those that became posters finally emerged. Now he is looking forward to seeing how his images are received and where they will end up in the world.
