The fine art of papercuts

  21.08.2022 Traditions

“Typically Swiss” – a symbol of home, originality and authenticity – a fitting theme for the fine art of paper cutting. The theme was deliberately chosen for the 10th-anniversary of the Swiss decoupage exhibition.

From the symmetrical paper cut in black and white to the multi-coloured collage, the smallest of paper particles to the large-scale, all fragile artworks. The range of works shows the diversity of this craft. As a living tradition, paper-cutting combines precise craftsmanship with artistic creation and current themes. Its delicacy, precision and filigree imagery have fascinated generations. Since its first appearance in Switzerland in the late 17th century, the art of paper cutting has undergone constant change.

The vernissage of the exhibition took place last in early July. For the 10th anniversary, the association deliberately looked for a venue where it had never exhibited before. The artists were warmly welcomed in Lucerne at the Hans Erni Museum. An honour for Decoupage Switzerland. Hans Erni has always been interested in his home country and in craft techniques. The exhibition shows the whole width of what decoupage can be today.

72 works by 72 artists – 53 women and 19 men – were selected. There were 18 works from French-speaking Switzerland and five from abroad. 15 members took part for the first time, which is particularly pleasing as the promotion of young artists is a major focus of the association. Four artists from Obersimmental and Saanenland also made it. They are Ueli Hauswirth, Hans-Jürgen Glatz, Marc Schweizer and Regina Martin. Four artists who have devoted themselves entirely to decoupage.

The wonderful creations in all their diversity are part of Switzerland's intangible artistic heritage and show how actively this tradition is kept alive and and cultivated.
