Wawrinka expected at Roy Emerson Arena

The major sporting events that ensure an eventful summer in the Saanenland are waiting for their starting signal. The tennis tournament Swiss Open Gstaad have announced big names.

Once again, the “Wimbledon of the Alps” will take place at the end of July, and the tennis pros will compete for the title in the middle of the village.

Wawrinka’s competition
Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka and two players from the ATP top ten, 2018 winner Matteo Berrettini and defending champion Casper Ruud, will return to Gstaad.

Stan Wawrinka will finally serve again in the Roy Emerson Arena in July. The last time he played there was in 2013. The 37-year-old completes a promising tableau after the earlier commitments of Casper Ruud (ATP 5), Roberto Bautista Agut (ATP 20), Benoît Paire (ATP 76) and Christian Garin (ATP 44).

Wawrinka recently celebrated his first win since the Australian Open 2021 after a long absence at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Rome against Reilly Opelka (ATP 18). But the competition this year will be fierce.

For his part, Matteo Berrettini (ATP 11) started a steep climb up the ATP rankings with his Gstaad title win in 2018. After reaching the final at Wimbledon 2021 and the recent success at Queen’s Club, the 26-yearold Italian is a firm favourite. The same can be said about defending champion Casper Ruud after reaching the finals at this year’s Roland Garros and going head-to-head with Nadal.

In addition to Wawrinka’s presence, spectators at the EFG Swiss Open Gstaad will also be able to follow Dominic Stricker’s goal of establishing himself in the top 100. Richard Gasquet (ATP 69) and Lorenzo Sonego (ATP 32) will also be in Gstaad.

Anticipation guaranteed
The tournament organisers are looking forward to the many exceptional players. “The Swiss fans are very happy to see Stan playing tennis again after a lengthy injury. For us, it is even nicer to have him with us in Gstaad on his way back to the top of the world. Together with Berrettini, Ruud, Bautista Agut and Stricker, spectacle is guaranteed this year,” says tournament director Jeff Collet.
