Active against food waste

  18.07.2022 Local News

In Switzerland, one-third of all food produced – about 2.2 million tons – ends up in the rubbish every year. Almost half of this is generated in private households. This was the starting point for two young women and their pioneering project Madame Frigo. A Swiss project launching at national level through communal refrigerators accessible to the public, where residents can make any unused edible food available to others free of charge.

3 locations have been established in Saanenland in collaboration with the Saanen Women's Association and local sponsors:
• Gstaad: at the main entrance to the parish hall (Untergstaadstrasse 8)
• Saanen: under the stairs at the Schmid grocery shop (Dorfstrasse 76)
• Schönried: in front of the car park of the old fire brigade magazine (on Hubelstrasse)

What can you donate?
Fruit and vegetables and bread, unopened products that have reached the best-before-date, and non-alcoholic beverages

Not allowed are fresh meat and fish, cooked or prepared food, opened products, and products that are past their used-by-date and alcohol.

The “Madame Frigo” project was started by two young women in Bern and has already been extended to 100 locations throughout Switzerland. Further information can be found at madamefrigo.ch.

If you have any questions or if you cannot bring the goods to the fridges yourself, please contact the Women's Association Saanen on 079 769 86 89.
