Noel von Grünigen had no idea that his family and friends would surprise him with a party. After a successful season and his fixed World Cup spot for next winter, the moment was perfect to honour Noel’s efforts and achievements with a small celebration. The event plus the founding of his fan club remained a total secret from the 27-year-old ski racer from Schönried.

Von Grünigen was on a training camp abroad when he received a phone call that he needed to come home earlier to meet with an important sponsor.

“It’s quite difficult to surprise me,” said von Grünigen, “I often sniff out a secret way before it’s even aired.” But this time he had no idea at all. Not even when he arrived at the restaurant terrace. Seeing that guests had already arrived he did not make the connection and that the celebration was for him. And then finally, the penny dropped. Deeply touched by the gesture – he was still in for yet another surprise, namely his very own fan club.

“For me, it’s a huge honour,” Noel said. Now the fans can coordinate who will go to which race to support the Schönrieder in the World Cup races.

And what about Noel? He will be training on the slopes until the end of June. And then, he will be busy with fitness training, various summer sports and his correspondence course in economics.
