The always eagerly awaited GaultMillau Guide was published at the beginning of December. It features three newcomers from the Saanenland.

Did you know that, in purely mathematical terms, each municipality in the Saanenland, including Rougemont, has five awarded restaurants – or five and a half, to be precise? There are 22 of them, three more than last year, listed in the recently published GaultMillau Guide 2022 between Rougemont and Gsteig, an almost unbelievable number compared to the 10,000 inhabitants.

The three newcomers
Editor-in-chief Urs Heller lists three newcomers in the 556-page gourmet guide: the Hotel Restaurant Valrose, Rougemont, with 17 points, the Golf Restaurant in Saanenmöser by Martin Bieri, 14 points and the Hotel Alpenland, Lauenen, with 13 points. This ranks the Valrose as the best of the three GaultMillau restaurants in Rougemont.

Martin Bieri in two restaurants
Martin Bieri has been at the helm of the Golf Restaurant kitchen since last season. For him, the current 14 points are just right. In summer, Bieri leads the kitchen brigade at the Golf Restaurant and in winter at the Eggli mountain restaurant and the new Eggli Lounge. “I’m very happy with the 14 points. We will be able to deliver the same quality on the Eggli as well.”

Alpenland scores with yak
In Alpenland, the GaultMillau testers like the inclusive ambience: “In the morning, workers come by for a coffee and a sandwich. At lunchtime, it’s mainly hikers who eat in the restaurant.” In the evening, however, chef Silvio Wieland has greater ambitions. In addition to the regular menu, he also serves a tasting menu, preferably with yak from the region and mountain potatoes from Feutersoey.

Last year, Urs Heller awarded the gastronomy in the region with 260 GaultMillau points. This year’s listing breaks the 300 points mark.
