Digitalisation saves fawns

Fawn rescue in Switzerland with drones and thermal imaging cameras is successful: never before have so many hectares of land been flown over and so many fawns saved from death by mowers.

Fawn Rescue Switzerland (Rehkitzrettung Schweiz) looks back on a very successful fawn rescue season 2021, the association writes in a statement. More than 300 rescue teams were able to find and save 2569 fawns.

Thanks to digitalisation over the last years, rescuing fawns has become much more effective and is developing rapidly. Among other things, the ratio between days of operation and fawns found has improved massively, and the area flown over has doubled compared to last year.

In combination with the conventional methods of scaring away fawns, so they don’t even go into the dangerous fields, in which the local hunters work closely with the farmers, results are better from year to year, the association says.

It is mainly the work with drones and thermal imaging cameras that enables an increasingly efficient search for fawns. However, the association cannot cover all areas in Switzerland and is therefore looking for new drone pilots.
