Snoasis becomes Eggli Lounge

Thu, 20. May. 2021

The former Snoasis restaurant at the Eggli mountain station was recently demolished. The opening of the new Eggli Lounge is planned for December 2022.

"At the moment, the new Eggli Lounge is under construction and should open as early as December," says managing director of Bergbahnen Destination Gstaad (BDG) Matthias In-Albon. The lounge will consist of a small indoor area, including a gallery on the upper floor and a spacious outdoor area.

While people will be able to chill out in the sun on the large terrace, there will be a U-shaped bar and cosy booths inside. Additional seating will be created on a suspended gallery, which can also be used separately. The new building is the same size as the former one.

Staff rooms
Rooms for seasonal workers are rare in Gstaad but essential for tourism businesses. "There used to be staff rooms in the Eggli mountain station, which was valuable for running the restaurant," says In-Albon. The mountain station has since been replaced without staff rooms. BDG is planning eight staff rooms in the Eggli Lounge to fill this gap.

One of the last pieces of the puzzle
The new Eggli cable car opened in December 2019, and the new Eggli mountain restaurant a year later. In-Albon: "Now only a few pieces of the jigsaw are missing until the infrastructure project 'Eggli cable car and restaurants' is completed." The Eggli Lounge and the landscaping will be followed by a conversion of the workshop next to the Eggli valley station and the construction of a new toboggan run from the mountain station to the valley station, including snowmaking facilities.

Building permit granted a year ago
"The former railway building, which was last used as a restaurant, was partly dilapidated and no longer up to date; we had to replace it," says In-Albon. While BDG successfully operates several dining restaurants in the destination, it lacked a niche product. With other destinations increasingly focusing on lounge concepts, BDG also sees an opportunity in this. BDG received the building permit a year ago. Because of the Corona pandemic, the company postponed construction for a year.
