Let's talk about it

In my first editorial last summer I suggested that we do not talk about the coronavirus. Not because it was no longer topical but because people were beginning to be fed up with it. Well, it is still the topic of the day, whether we are fed up or not. And this time I suggest we do talk about it!

The Saanenland got away comparatively well last summer. People were looking for distraction and shelter in nature. The tourism industry suffered less than it could have.

This winter will not be the same, though. Infection numbers have been on the rise since the typical flu season set in. The health care system is reaching its limit and another lockdown may be the consequence, if we do not manage to get a grip on the situation.

Everything seems to be at stake: family reunions and leisure time options, which are vital to our mental wellbeing – people are more thin-skinned than ever; but also the health care system and the economy of the entire nation.

In order to keep shops and restaurants open and to be able to have some degree of freedom over the holidays it takes an effort of everybody. This Holiday Season will demand every bit of respect, compassion and humility we can muster.
