New Water Plant Approved

The project involves the construction of three underground groundwater pumping stations, an overground main pumping station, and transport pipelines. The council has approved the utility water concession for 40 years as well as a groundwater protection zone, and granted the necessary building permits. As a result, nothing stands in the way of implementing the project.

According to Arno Romang, deputy head of the water supply of the municipality of Saanen, construction can begin in spring 2018 after the snow melts. A start in spring means, according to Romang, an extra effort. The water level after the snowmelt is higher than in the autumn, which will mean planning in case of dewatering. This could cause a slight delay, but nevertheless, a construction period of two years is expected.

Thanks to an early building permit, three wells have already been built. This makes it possible to feed 2000 liters of water (and up to 10,000 in emergencies) with temporaries into the existing network in the Allmistrasse. In the worst case, according to Romang, new pumps could be put into operation with the necessary installation. This could prevent a scenario like last winter, when on 1 Jan. at Heberbrunnen Enge, a groundwater level of just 51 centimeters above the reference minimum could be measured. In the previous year, this had been even lower, at just 21 centimeters. If the water level had continued to fall, drinking water would need to have been secured externally.
