Friends of Rellerli Group Created

The mountain railways company’s restructuring plan in autumn 2015 announced the dismantling of the beloved mountain’s cable car when its concession ends in 2018. The area’s 4000 m2 land parcel was then sold to Ernesto Bertarelli, who plans to remove the existing station and create a luxury lodge. This, under the condition that he not build a new railway, but ensure access only by means of personal transport vehicles and hiking trails.

Residents, landowners, and local companies have objected to this plan, despite the uncertainty if current spatial planning laws will even allow such an infrastructure construction. Balancing sustainability as well as private and public interests is no easy task.

The example of Wasserngrat, which was sold privately and is operated by the Eagle Ski Club shows one possible path, emphasizes Baur.

Friends of Rellerli distributed a letter to Saanenland residents entitled “Rellerli—A Pearl of a Destination”. Within just a few days, numerous supporters at home and abroad got in touch with the organisation. Their objectives to keep the Rellerli open for public use for sports and leisure activities, as well as continue the cable car and restaurant, have clearly found a soft spot amongst the region’s residents and guests.
