The newspaper SonntagsZeitung has released its winter hotel ratings, with Gstaad-area properties earning top marks. The Hotel Spitzhorn is—for the fourth year in a row—rated number one in the 3-star hotel category.
The list ranks the 75 best winter hotels in Switzerland, and continues to be dominated by the region’s 5-star superior properties, with every local 5-star property making the list. However this year, Gstaad establishments didn’t take the podium, which was reserved for the Kulm Hotel in St. Moritz, The Chedi in Andermatt and the Tschuggen in Arosa.
As for 4-star hotels, Hotel Hornberg in Saanenmöser came in at seventh place, moving up two places from last year. While the Alpine Lodge, which made the list last year as well, is no longer in business as a 4-star hotel but as a B&B and dormitories, former manager Günther Weilgüni’s new project did very well. New to the list of honours at number 13 is Weilguni’s HUUS, which opened its doors last year after a double-digit million-franc renovation.
On the less pricey side, the Hotel Kernen in Schönried has made its seventh appearance on the list. Hotel Spitzhorn, under the tutelage of Ilse and Michel Wichman, has picked up the top prize once again, and is warmly described by SonntagsZeitung. Its reputation as a great deal—often described as a 3-star with 4-star amenities and service—has yet again propelled it to overall winner.
