The Saanenland is set to increase its visibility in the world of strings, as Saanen will now be home to a world-class violin academy for children. The Negri Music Program, founded by renown violinist Miguel Negri, will open its doors in September 2017
A pupil of Lord Menuhin, Negri spent much of his childhood in the Saanenland. He had a wide-ranging career as a musician, performing with the Camerata Lysy in his youth and branching out to give concerts worldwide.
The program is courting highly talented children and teenagers from the age of six years onward and comes with a scholarship to the John F. Kennedy International School (JFK). Participants will have regular classes at JFK and receive high-level violin lessons from Negri and associate Hu Kun. Hu Kun is not only a regular soloist, but a conductor and presenter of masterclasses at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Students may either live at boarding facilities, with a host family, or with their own families locally.
The funds for the Negri Music Program scholarships are provided mostly by donors, and the school notes that it’s on the right track for securing the total amount necessary. There are already more than a dozen applications, but the scholarship will begin with four students and be open to additional, paying students as well.
