Swiss Tourism Up Slightly
24.10.2016 Local NewsIn total, August 2016 saw overnight stays total 4.1 million, showing a 1% higher figure than 2015.
This was due mostly to Swiss citizens who chose to forgo international holidays and vacation at home; the nationality had a 1.5% increase in overnight stays, with 1.7 million more overnight stays. Foreign tourism showed a 2.4% decrease however, amounting to 2.4 fewer overnight stays.
The biggest loss of tourism was from Asia, from which 11% fewer tourists visited Switzerland. More frequent guests from other parts of the world included Americans, with 1% more overnight stays.
Some of Switzerland’s biggest traditional tourist regions saw a decrease, with Ticino and Valais the biggest losers. Areas that saw an increase included Luzern and the Vierwaldstättersee region, as well as Geneva.
