Les Arts de Gstaad - and the winner is...
This is how the the new cultural center in Gstaad could look. The competition for the project Les Arts Gstaad has been won by French architect Rudy Ricciotti, with his re-creation of a mountain made out of wood that will be located just behind the railway station in central Gstaad. While private investors have been lined up to finance the construction and running of the culture center, it's still early days as we await some necessary changes in the design, the inevitable objections from the neighbors, the small matter of the Gemeinde needing to rezone the land, and of course approval of the people of Saanenland. Well, what do you think of it, dear Readers?

Absolutely disgusting...please stop this absurdity

Ghastly! What has it got to do with Gstaad?

Wow!! PT - How can you say this has nothing to do with Gstaad?? - it looks like every giant pile of manure that is attached to every cow barn in the surrounding mountains. Now every visitor who comes and goes by train can always associate Gstaad with giant piles of manure :)

ghastly...a monstrous structure that does not grace the village, architecture that struts instead of enhancing the setting

Actually these photos don't do it justice. See the rest of the presentation before passing judgement. Other photos show a very dramatic night illumination concept, and the inside is a grotto concert hall just as Sir Yehudi dreamed up with I.M. Pei back in the day. For me the biggest problem is lack of grand entrance: a grand concert hall needs a grand entrance: red carpets in underground parking lots don't do it. The exhibition of this and the runners up is still going on at the Landhaus in Saanen. Check out the first runner up: if this one can't be built for any reason, they'll fall back to #2. Here's hoping...

Dear Mr. Maunder, sorry to disappoint you, but my evaluation has risen after I saw all the projects. (Imho, I have a preference for the project n.18, that is more coherent and correlated to the location). Mr Riciotti is a famous and celebrated architect, but honestly, I'm not an enthusiastic of his works that can be ok in Paris, Potsdam, Marseille or Selestat, but, I repeat: this is not for Gstaad, sorry.

Il faut arrêter de détruire Gstaad .
Nous ne sommes pas à New -York...
Gstaad a tellement de charme qu'il ne faut pas l'enlaidir par des architectures modernes et complètement hors mesure.

Absolutely appalling! Is there no overall concept or do we accept one monstrosity after another?
