Cilit hands 2nd round exit to defending champion
The Croat Marin Cilit, currently ranked no 43, created an early surprise in Gstaad by defeating title holder Paul-Henri Mathieu in two sets, 6-3, 6-4. Cilit's victory is his third in a row against the Frenchman who was knocked out by Cilit in the third round of Wimbledon last month. In the quarter finals Cilit (whose new nickname has to be "Cilit-Bang"!) will meet Igor Andreev. Still in fine form, the Russian did away with another Frenchman Florent Serra in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. Switzerland's no 2 Stanislas Wawrinka also made it into the quarter finals by scraping past his Davis Cup partner Stephane Bohli in a match which saw two tie-breaks, including in the final set: 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, 7-6 (7-3). He will play against the Argentinian Guilllermo Canas who earned himself a free ticket following the retirement of his 2nd round Belgian opponent Kristof Vliegen.
