Trouble for Transafricans after 100 meters

Military proving grounds

Olivet, France

20061103land_rover_engineThere was trouble for Stan de Sadeleer and Hansueli Brand moments into today's stage at the Olivet military training ground. After just 100 meters their Land Rover Discovery 1 completely died (you can hear the Land Rover drivers groaning now :-)  Brand initially suspected the fuel line, but when attention in that area didn't remedy the problem, he then found a fault in the ignition cable. He was able to perform immediate and rapid repairs, and got the team on their way through the mud and water. They ended up completing the off-road section in around an hour, collecting the maximum number of points possible in light of their 7-minute delay. In a call to GstaadLife.com after the debacle, de Sadeleer was a great spirits, reflecting on the fact that there are only another 9.2 million meters to go! At 10h35 they left the military area for the 10-hour run to Narbonne, which hopefully will feature less drama than today's start.
