20061103narbonne_cathedralAfter a morning of drama, Stan de Sadeleer and Hansueli Brand arrived safely this evening in Narbonne in the south of France to complete the Transafricaine Rally's first testing stage. The rest of the day saw a smooth 700 km south through western France, and Brand reported this evening that after the problem with the ignition cable, the vehicle is once again in perfect working order. The mud and water sections of Olivet were so testing that a number of competitors did not finish the special section, and a few even took the maximum 504 penalty points and opted to not even attempt the 1 meter deep river traverses. Our Team GAC was not one to shirk the challenge, however, and despite being totally soaked (even the timers in the car stopped working after being waterlogged), they were able to complete the special section and make up time on the autoroute to Narbonne due to the Land Rover's superior on-road performance.

The main challenges were navigating the Toulouse evening rush hour in order to score minimize penalty points, which are as follows:

  • One penalty point for every second late in the European sections
  • Two penalty points for every second early in the European sections
  • One penalty point for every minute late in the African sections
  • Two penalty points for every minute early in the African sections

Tomorrow de Sadeleer and Brand take in a ~800 km run to Alicante in Spain, which includes another off-road special section in the forests of Château de Montplaisir. They depart at 09h04 in 44th position for their class (out of 54), with an expected arrival in Alicante around 19h15.
