Departure Transafricaine Classic Rally

Courbevoie, France

20061102team_gac_ta_start_lineUnder clear blue skies, the 75 competitors in the 1st Transafricaine Classic Rally today paraded along the banks of the Seine and through the streets of central Paris as they embarked on their voyage to Dakar. Among them was Team Gstaad Automobile Club car number 54, the orange Land Rover Discovery 1 driven by Stan de Sadeleer and Hansueli Brand. In a telephone call to GstaadLife.com just before the start, de Sadeleer said that the large number of expertly-prepared classic cars and the presence of a handful of past Paris-Dakar Rally champions (not to mention a few sporting celebrities) gave the air more of a competitive edge than the typical amateur rally. Nevertheless there was much excitement as the cars left Courbevoie for the first official checkpoint at the Trocadéro fountain in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, where 27 years ago almost to the day Thierry Sabine had led off the competitors for the first Paris-Dakar.

de Sadeleer and Brand had no problems on today's easy first stage, focusing on the car and learning the intricacies of the GPS computers and the rigourous interval timing system they have to master to score maximum points. Indeed, now that the race has officially begun you can follow the exploits of the Gstaad duo live right here with our Transafricaine moving map. The map shows the real-time location of Team GAC #54 along with exact time and speed. Upon arrival, de Sadeleer and Brand were in good spirits and confident for the start of the real racing tomorrow, beginning in the French military training ground in Olivet (near Orléans). Here is tomorrow's program:

  • 09h00 Arrival of the competitors at the military training ground in Olivet
  • 09h20: Approximate departure time for Team Gstaad Automobile Club
  • Over a pre-assigned off-road course through the military training ground, then onto the RN.20 - Salbris - La Motte-Beuvron - Vierzon - Autoroute A20 - Chateauoux - Limoges - Brive - Cahors - Périphérique de Montélimar.
  • A66 - Toulouse, Périphérique
  • A61 - Narbonne
  • 18h20: Approximate arrival time of Team GAC at the Parc des Sports de Narbonne
