Team GAC makes landfall in Africa

This evening Stan de Sadeleer and Hansueli Brand arrived in Tangier Morocco. Their day was another smooth one, featuring a 600+ km drive from Alicante to Algésiras with a very well-attended special off-road section in a "dry" river bed in Huercal Overa. Thing was that it had been raining most of the day before, so the river was not quite dry. In fact it was seriously muddy, but nothing that our intrepid duo in their Land Rover Discovery 1 couldn't handle. In fact they reported this afternoon that cleaning the car was the biggest challenge of the day, because heading into the desert with the car caked in mud isn't the best idea. Why? Because the mud totally blocked the air intakes for the cooling system, so when the desert heat bears down on the car and it's not able to cool...well you know what happens. Anyway Team GAC and their shiny car boarded the ferry Al Mansour from Algésiras to Tangier this evening for the 2-hour crossing.
We can't bring you their current position because it seems that even the rally organizers are taking it easy this evening. However with around 300 km to run in 3 hours, Brand was confident of an on-time arrival with minimal penalties. Catch up with us here on GstaadLife.com tomorrow for all of the day's official results. Team Gstaad erreicht Afrika
Heute Abend haben Stan de Sadeleer und Hansueli Brand auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent Fuss gefasst und sind wohlbehalten in Tangier, Marokko angekommen. Die Beiden brachten die über 600 km lange Tagesetappe von Alicante nach Algésiras reibungslos über die Bühne und meisterten sogar einen speziellen Abschnitt in einem „trockenen“ Flussbett mit Bravour. Leider regnete es den ganzen Tag und so war das Flussbett nicht mehr ganz so trocken, wie es hätte sein sollen und das ganze wurde eine schlammige Angelegenheit. Die grösste Herausforderung des Tages wurde das Putzen, das in Vorbereitung für die Wüste besonders wichtig ist. Jeglicher Schlamm und Dreck muss von den Ventilen entfernt werden, so dass nichts blockiert wird und sich der Landrover in der Hitze genug abkühlen kann. Mit einem blitzblanken Landrover konnten Brand und de Sadeleer schliesslich an Bord des Schiffes Al Mansour gehen und sich während der zweistündigen Überfahrt von Algésiras nach Tangier etwas zurücklehnen. Momentan können wir die genaue Position der Beiden leider nicht durchgeben, da es scheinbar sogar die Organisatoren heute Abend nicht allzu ernst nehmen. Mit 300 km zu fahren und nur drei Stunden Zeit zeigte sich Brand jedoch zuversichtlich, dass sie pünktlich und mit minimalen Strafpunkten ankommen werden.
