Smooth sailing into Spain

Alicante, Spain

20061104team_gac_special_forest_section1Stan de Sadeleer and Hansueli Brand had a smooth run to Alicante Spain today from Narbonne. The day started with another special section in the grounds of Chateau de Monplaisir, where after a greeting by the Mayor of Narbonne, the competitors traced a demanding, fast course through the castle's vineyards, replete with narrow unpaved surfaces and vertiginous drop-offs. Speaking to GstaadLife.com this afternoon, Brand said they threw all they had at the section, which suited both the Land Rover and Brand's driving style well. After the 15 kilometers of off-road, Team GAC faced almost 800 km of on-road driving to Alicante mid-way down Spain's southern coast.

20061104alicante0_1They used the time to well, studying maps and programming the GPS computer for the treacherous African sections that lay ahead. The good news is that with their 18h49 arrival time, the Gstaad Transafricans improved drastically on their position of yesterday, coming in 10th out of 54 in their class fr tday and moving up to 29th overall (click here for full standings). There was one minor hiccup with one of the car's trip computers, but Brand was able to repair it in about an hour upon arrival in Alicante. Tomorrow sees an early start for Team GAC at around 07h20, and asides from the the evening ferry crossing to Morocco from Algésiras, there is another special section near Huercal Overa in the bed of a dry river. The only problem: tomorrow's weather calls for downpours, which promise to make navigating a dry river less than dry...
